Neurological Physiotherapy
Neurological Physiotherapy is a specialist field that deals with the assessment and treatment of conditions affecting the brain, spinal cord and nerves.

By identifying abnormalities in the motor sensory systems, we can apply treatment techniques to improve functional activities.

Some of the treatment techniques used are:
-
Posture management
-
Tonal (spasticity) management
-
Sensory Re-education
-
Balance Re-education

Neurological Hydrotherapy
Hydrotherapy is a great medium to provide rehabilitation for neurological conditions.
Hydrotherapy reduces the effect of gravity on the body, therefore activities such as walking are easier. The buoyancy the water offers also reduces the impact on joints allowing you to exercise at higher intensity

Benefits of Hydrotherapy may include:
-
Tonal management
-
Strengthening training
-
Assisted exercise
-
Cardiovascular training
-
Gait Re-education

Gait Re-education
Gait is a term used to describe the way an individual walks.
Following a neurological injury or disease an individual's gait is normally affected secondary to abnormalities of the motor and sensory systems.

By analysing the various components of gait and its biomechanics, we can address gait abnormalities.
Using neurological physiotherapy techniques and/or applying external devices such as orthotics, walking becomes less effortful, less painful and more efficient.

Exercise and Fitness Training
The importance of exercise is well documented.

A neurological condition may adversely impact your fitness levels.

The ability to participate, even for light exercise such as walking, may be limited and not of a sufficient intensity to maintain your fitness levels.

By devising a fitness and exercise plan that is tailored to your level of disability, we can start to negate the negative effects that are associated with deconditioning.

Soft Tissue Release
Soft tissue release is a therapeutic technique used to improve the flexibility of muscles and connective tissue.

Soft tissue release integrates 3 techniques:

-
Massage
-
Myofascial release, active or active/assisted muscle stretch in weight bearing postures.
-
Applying precise pressure at a specific point.

Following a neurological injury or disease, muscles and connective tissue may become shortened due to alterations in its elasticity, muscular imbalance and joints adopting shortened positions for prolonged periods.
Over time, this may not only be painful and affect the functionality of a joint but may also impair functional activities such as walking.
Recreational Rehabilitation
Recreational rehabilitation uses recreational activities to promote physical movement, emotional wellbeing and social integration with other individuals that hold a common interest with you.

Recreational rehabilitation is not isolated to sport, it can be any recreation that you enjoy. It could be something physical such as playing football or basketball or something less strenuous for example painting or birdwatching.

The main goal is that it brings you a sense of wellbeing and a sense of achievement thereby promoting your mental health and demonstrating that rehabilitation also includes fun and play.

Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation
Neuromuscular Electrical stimulation or Functional Electrical stimulation is a treatment that applies a small electrical current to the surface of the skin which in turn makes your muscles move.

Under normal conditions, the movement of a muscle occurs when a chemical and electrical signal is delivered from the brain. Neurological conditions may interrupt these chemical and electrical signals leading to partial or full paralysis of the muscle.

By applying electrical stimulation to the paralysed muscle, the muscle is able to move again during the period that the muscle is being stimulated. Electrical
stimulation can assist with mediating messages back to the brain to aid the recovery and function of the limb or your trunk.
Disability
Life Plan
A neurological injury or disease is a life changing event.
Its impact may be felt in every aspect of your life.

Living with a neurological injury or disease can be challenging, adjusting and navigating your life's journey with this neurological condition
can be a steep learning curve and sometimes overwhelming.

With a Disability Life Plan, we can start to focus on different areas; providing direction, addressing aspects of your life with the aim to optimise your quality-of-life whist still living with your neurological condition.
